Today you’ll learn how to choose a good blog name for your online business without scratching your head when you want to start a new blog.

Whether you’re struggling to pick the name or you have no idea where to start, this guide will point you in the right direction.

To be clear, a blog’s name is the first thing your target audience sees when they land on your blog post, social media post, sale page, or email newsletter.

If you choose something that people won’t remember, it will be hard for you to build a brand presence on the web.

So when it comes to choosing a name for your bog, you need to consider something that’s not only easy to read but also memorable.

Four Things to Consider Before Choosing a Name for Your Website

1) What Will Your Blog Be About?

Frist, determine what you want to blog about. You want to stay focused from the very beginning and there’s no better way to start than to learn how to pick a niche.

Your niche will make it easier for you to pick a relevant domain. That way, when visitors look at your blog name and the content on it, they can easily relate.

For example, you cannot choose a name like Petshub then blog about refrigerators.

2) Who is Your Target Audience?

Second, understand that you’re writing for a smart audience that will judge your blog by its name.

If the blog name that you choose doesn’t reflect your topic or resonate with them, even your readership is more than likely to trust you less.

3) What is Your Writing Style?

The tone you use to write your blog posts will depend on your target audience. This too can go a long way to help you determine the name to use for the blog.

If you’re targeting young people for example, you’ll want to use a more entertaining and humorous writing style to capture their attention.

4) What Happens if You want to expand your blog?

Choosing a name for your blog should not be hard even if you decide to blog about multiple topics on the same site.

In such a case, it would be best if you consider brandable names that a given audience can easily identify with. And provided the name of the blog is easy to remember, it should be easy for you to build it as a brand within a reasonable time.

The good thing about brandable names is that they allow you to scale up your site structure.

So if you intend to have multiple niches under one site, and tons of content under each category, a generally brandable domain should be your best bet.

A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing a Blog Name

I’ll be honest with you:

Choosing a blog name is hard. Even if you find the most profitable niche and are ready to write some awesome blog posts for your audience, getting a good name to build a brand presence can be quite a task.

I have been there, done that.

With all the good domain names such as shoes, fashion, blogging, and freelancing already taken, it seems like finding a suitable name for your next project can be an uphill task.

But let me make something very clear:

While finding a good name for your blog can be a challenge, it’s certainly not impossible.

Below are some tips that you can use to choose a relevant name for the site that you’re about to start.

1. Use Your Name

You probably haven’t thought about using your name as the identity for your blog. But it’s a no brainer approach that can make the process painlessly easy for you.

Go to this domain search tool, type in your name, and click the search button to check if the name is available.

Many bloggers assume that this kind of naming is suitable only for personal blogs where you write about you, your life, or the services that you provide. While that’s true, you can still use your name even if you don’t intend to write about yourself.

Let’s say you’re into weight loss blogging. You can call the blog your name and then develop it in a way that establishes you as an authority in the subject.

Keep in mind that this approach only works well if your name is simple enough to spell and remember.

2. Get Ideas from Your Competitor’s Blog Names

Your name already makes a unique brand identity to consider. But if a combination of your first and last name isn’t available for registration, or you feel like using your name isn’t going to be a good fit, consider getting ideas from your competitor’s blogs.

Let’s say you want to start a fitness blog. It would be best if you checked the name of the blogs in the same vertical to come up with unique ideas for your business.

Look at these branded names:

  • Fitnessgalore.com
  • Nerdfitness.com
  • Fitnessverve.com
  • Fitnesshavens.com

These are just examples. But they’re clearly good competing domain names whose verticals are easy to spot from a first glance.

In other words, it doesn’t take you more than 3 seconds to know what the blogs are about. They are all in the fitness space. Not to mention the domain names are easy to remember.

That’s how you want your domain names to be. Short, memorable, and easy to type in the search bar.

This approach can yield you tons of domain name ideas because it’s quite easy to implement. Simply identify the blogs in your niche, determine the common terms they use in their domain names, and then come up with a unique name for your blog.

3. Use a Blog Name Generator

I call this the lazy approach to looking for a blog name for a niche site. But if used well, a blog name generator can give you some idea you would never even have thought of in the first place.

A blog name generator is an easy to use tool. Visit the site, enter a keyword in your niche, click the search button, and let the tool do the work for you.

Let’s say I want to review laptops and related accessories, but I don’t have a name for my blog just yet.

I take that keyword, click Generate, and wait about 45 seconds for the tool to generate some suggestions that I can use.

Here’s what I got once the tool finished suggesting some ideas for name that you can use to create a new blog in the niche space.

suggested blog names

The results aren’t shabby if you and these can make good blog name ideas for your niche site.

Now all you have to do is a domain name lookup to check if these names are available for registration.  You can do that on Namecheap, Go Daddy, or Bluehost.

4. Get Some Ideas from Thesaurus

Think of thesaurus a unique blog name generator that gives you a variation of ideas that you can use to come up with a good name for your blog.

To use this tool, enter a seed keyword, such as fitness, in the search box. Then click on the search icon, or press the ENTER key on your keyboard for thesaurus to generate synonyms for the broad term.

The results are exceptional.

You end up with unique terms that you’d have never even thought about in the first place. And a combination of these words can make the best blog name to consider for your niche.

5. Use a Different Language to Name Your Blog

You may have never thought of this before, but it’s so far one of the easiest ways to come up with a unique name for the blog you’re about to start.

The fun part is you can do this with just about any language. But you have to be as creative as possible.

A great way to approach this is to opt for phrases with fewer syllables. Doing so will not only allow you to choose an interesting name, but also ensure the name is easy to read and remember.

6. Try Alliteration

Alliteration is a technique where you use the same letter for each word in a name. And it’s a great way to come up with a unique blogging name fast.

Let’s say you plan to start a fitness niche, and you want the word fitness as part of your blog’s name.

In this case, something like “Fancy Fitness Friends” would make a good name.

It’s not the best name for a blog, but you get the idea of the whole alliteration thing.

7. Add a Little Humor to Your Topic to Come Up With a Good Blog Name

If you’re the kind of blogger that can create humor from just about anything, you can do so with the domain name of your blog.

This isn’t for everyone, though. And you shouldn’t use this approach if you intend to start a professional blog.

But if you’re in the hobby, entertainment, or lifestyle niche, you can add a little sense of humor to make your blog stand out.

A good example I’ve ever found online is Bored Panda. I just find the name humorous every time I think of the site.

You get the idea, don’t you?

8. Use Abbreviation

Using abbreviations is an excellent approach if you want to come up with blog name fast.

And given that you end up with a short, easy to type name, your visitors will definitely remember the name when they think about your niche.

Again, using abbreviations is a great way to build a brand identity that stands out. And you do that without swaying too far away from your blog’s central theme.

9. Use the Words Game Approach to Create a Name for Your Blog

Even if someone else has already registered a blog name that you love, you can still get a variation of the same and stand out as unique.

That’s why I suggest that you play the words game to get an ideal name to call your blog.

Here’s how this works:

Go to Panabee and enter at least two or three words in the input field.

Click the search button and let the tool generate some name ideas for you depending on the combination of the words you typed.

You’ll often end up with a ton of good ideas, which you can either rephrase or use as is to name your blog.

10. Get Blog Name Ideas from Books

There’s a book published for nearly all the blogging niches that make money. And that means you can get some good name ideas from the world’s greatest authors in any vertical.

To be clear:

You don’t have to be a dedicated book reader to get this right. Simply go to Amazon Books, choose a suitable category, and then read the book summary.

You’ll be surprised just how many good ideas you come up with in under 60 minutes.

11. Choose a Random Name

Another way to come up with a good identify for your blog is to think of a random name that can fit your audience well.

Look at your niche and think of something random that’s more likely to blend in. Write down five to ten ideas, and then pick a name that would go hand in hand with the topic in question.

And by the way, I think this would be a great approach to use if you intent to blog about different topics on the same site.

Final Thoughts

While it can take time to find a suitable name to call your blog, you shouldn’t get bogged down by the details of it.

If you can’t use your name, get ideas from your competitor. If you just want to get this done and over with fast, use a domain name generator.

It’s that simple.
